This past week Lyra got 10 1/2 inches of her hair cut off. Her hair had grown SOOO long, to the point of being unmanageable, and she desperately needed a haircut. We figured if there was ever a time her hair would be long enough to donate, this was it. It’s not something we really think about much, but people with albinism are not immune to cancer or other illnesses that could cause hair loss. I think that if for any reason, a person with albinism needed a wig, that they would be incredibly grateful to have one that was their natural hair color.
We are going to donate her hair either to Locks of Love, or a similar organization we learned about called Beautiful Lengths. Before we decide, I am going to call both companies and make sure they will accept and use the hair we send. Neither company will use what they think is bleached hair, so I want them to know that the hair would be coming from a person with albinism and is her natural hair color.
Here are some before and after pics.
